Sometimes small packages contain the prettiest gift

Waking up this morning and confused for a moment.. thought this was a river cruise, not an Ocean voyage! We are visiting the port town of Enkhuizen this morning. When at the end of the 17th century the Dutch decided to build a dike to close off the area from the North Sea,that made a large inland lake. So large that it’s more like an ocean, but without simple sea water. After about 8 years the water became brackish and fish could no longer live in it. I guess now it has become fresh water because we saw a few fishing boats

Our tour is a leisure walk around the harbor looking and listening to the history of this delightful little central old town. There were interesting houses on every corner.
These houses were built for the poor to live in by an heiress who inherited money from the slave trade. The criteria to live in them was you could not drink,be loud or boisterous,of bad character and have 2000 guilders to pay for them.

The caretaker could come into your home at anytime to see if you were breaking the rules

The entrance gate

Spring is here. Tulip tree in bloom.
The coat of arms for the city is a blue shield with three herring

Cute tile work in the entry way of a home

One of many old warehouses. Each big door in the middle has a hook above it to help winch up things to be stored.

Another harbor. There are 9 in the town
Ship in a bottle museum

The lockmaster’s house now a ship in a bottle museum. Unfortunately it wasn’t open today

More ships in a bottle.

Part of a fortress

At the end of our tour we were treated to the local food: herring, raw with salt and onions.I managed to get down a couple of bites..my face shows my my disgust at the experience
Our guide shows how its done

It was all i could do not to puke. But I can say I tried herring.
And survived. And only if Im starving for three weeks or more will I ever eat herring raw again!
