We visit with the Druids.. field trip from Bath

The beautifully idyllic Avebury. Home to the largest Druid Stone circle in the world. Some 4500 years old.

Large stones in a big circle. Many are missing but they put markers where they would have stood in between the found stones.

They are found along both sides of the road

We walked the circle.

we were able to walk up next to the stones and the sheep grazing!

The gate led from one field into another

The Avebury chapel

Wonder where this goes?
Heading into the church grounds…the cemetery surrounds the church the church was closed but the painters working outside let us in to see the church.
Part of the bell stand

The alter

Hung in the corner are the weights for the bells

The interior

This is a grave in the floor of the church. There were many of these plaques throughout the church floor

An old unmarked grave in the yard.
The church from the high street

Thatched roof house. This is really a little village- about ten houses,a church,a manor house,a museum.two cafes and a pub!And lots of Druid stones!
It was a great experience to be able to walk right up to the stones and walk the circle.
We next headed over to the site at Stonehenge.  Since we just had experienced the Avebury stones, we were hesitant to go to Stonehenge, but decided to give it a try. Everything we read said it would be crowded, not able to see close up,etc.
On our way we passed the Cherhill white horse. It was carved in the hillside in the 1730s the hillside is mainly chalk right under the topsoil. The horse is one of seven carved various times in the local hills

 And then we entered Stonehenge!
    It was magnificient!

There’s so many questions about this! How”why?and how on earth did they get the ones on top???

We walked all the way around the circle.

The line points the direction of the midsummer sunset
The heel stone in the foreground

Between the two stones in the center would have been the entrance to the inner circle.

In the distance are numerous burial mounds

It was a windy, chilly day but we all decided it was worth it to see!
