A charming morning in Wertheim.

Sometimes nice things are in small packages. That’s how I would describe Wertheim, Bavaria,Germany.

Docked right outside of town waiting for our transportation into the medieval town.
It’s arrived!! Many of the towns have had these tourist trains but this is the first time we’ve gotten to actually ride one. It really was only a mile and a half into the city but still…fun is fun.
The main gate into the city. One of four remaining from the original 15 gates.

In the medieval times most people did not read so signs hung above each business to tell you what was sold in that building. This is the sign for a hotel, the Swan.

Narrow streets and wood framed houses

Since Wertheim is on the river Main there is constant threat of flooding. The metal posted on each side of the door is where a gate is in fitted to fend back the water.
Written on the house: spell house here…a witch lived there. At least that’s what the townsfolk thought during the 1600’s..just like our Salem witch trials.

The butcher lived here and became wealthy. The townspeople were jealous and spread rumors that they were magical people… the entire family was killed for being witches.

The witch house
The alleys are very narrow!

Another view of the flood history of the area
City market

Market square

Another sign for the Apothecary ( Pharmacy)

The builders marks

So looking at this street sign we tried to figure out what it meant. No children, nor playing? No… it means pedestrian area.. NO cars
This house was the original mint. This city issued its own money

Interesting decorations, huh?
The markings for weavers and fabric work

Have no idea what this is fo but it is a cute little dog. I kinda wish we had house art like this in today’s world!

An empty lot! The house was tore down and then the owner lost his funding to rebuild.. now an empty hole

During the medieval times this was the source of water for everyone. Quite a beautiful well isn’t it?
Partial ruins of the castle/fortress up on the hill. The ruins are used for community events now. There are no plans to restore it.
On our way back to the tchu-tchu we stopped here to get a snack. Can you tell what our snack was by the sign?
Wertheim has its own lending tower. You may not see the lean in these pictures so well but believe me we could really see it when we were beside it!

/al standing at an angle to make my picture look straight!
Our ride back to the ship again.. two train rides in a day!!!!Yippie!
