Port Chacabuco, Chile…rain,forest and lamb

The morning view from our stateroom. We are officially in the Chilean Fjords today. This little port is only assessable by sea and one small road, partially paved/parcially dirt that connects three communities to one another. Our excursion today is a hike in Patagonia with a lunch to follow. quite a nice port terminal. Tourism is about 10% of their income and rapidly growing. Usually in small ports we trudge through tents and out to the bus. This was quite the upgrade!

The view out the bus on our way to the private Forrest

In the fairground you can see our ship. This was a tendered port.
Driving towards the Forrest.
The beginning of the trail. Lots of tree canopy

The area burned over 200 years ago. There are remnant of the fire everywhere. Some trees recovered and grow from burnt roots

Behind me is a giant leafed plant. Seems almost tropical!

Our guide next to the leaves for size comparison

Remember it is the beginning of spring here and plants are just starting to flower.

The leaves are on a deep floor lying root.
We are hiking next to a river

This tree is growing from the trunk that fell sideways. You could almost crawl under it.

This plant was all over the floor of the forest in this location. It seems to be an air plant with sponge like properties. Our guide said it was almost wiped out because diaper companies found out about its absorbent properties and now use it inside the diapers. The push is now to sustainably farm it.

A peek through to a waterfall.

View from a bridge overlooking the river

The waterfall!

And if you look close you will see a kingfisher perched on a branch looking for fish. when we came out of the woods we were treated to a lovely lamb lunch. The lamb are cooked on a spit over a fire for 4-5 hours. It was a good reward for 3 miles of walking!

And there was dancing.wine and fun for all

View from the lunch site a huge one of these pants view of our ship from the dock
As we leave Port Chacabuco

The seas have been quiet while we are in the Fjords. Unfortunately we need to go back out into the open sea for a few hours/a day and that means more ginger ale, candied ginger and green apples for me! In two days we will once again be inside the fjords and I will be more comfortable.
