Heading into the harbor at Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. This will be our first tendered port. Being tendered is due to there not being dock space for large ships. The marina may be shallow and not deep enough for the ships to pull into. I have heard for years of the wonderful city of CABO so I was excited to finally get there. I was not quite ready for what I found… lets just say, I should probably visit again before I make an opinion.
Our tenders are compact and easy to get into and out of…except when there is a swell and you kinda need to jump! We enjoyed the quick ten minute ride to reach the dock.
We decided to try walking around but soon changed our plans and hired two pedicabs to give us a tour of the old town and beach areas. We are accosted by plenty of young men selling their tours. Even when we told them we already had them, they followed us and tried. Guess we should give them an A for giving it their all to make a buck. As the day went on, the area around the marina filled up with more and more street hawkers including children selling stuff… at times it was overwhelming.
This guy had muscles of steel! Al was impressed with how well he managed to drive us around! We enjoyed a 45 minute ride through the busy downtown of Cabo and a brief rest stop at the beach.
A brief look at Cabo Waco, the bar/club owned by Sammy Rae Vaughn. Guess its a rockin good time on his birthday when he comes a plays a concert for everyone. After our tour was over we headed back to the dock for our tour of Land’s End and whale watching. I must admit I was apprehensive about the whale sightings and I know it can be up in the air if you actually see anything, but my reason for this trip was to see the Arch. So many of the Arches on the ocean have collapsed that i wanted to see this one before time took it also. I got my wish!
This was a very busy spot for tourist boats so I wasn’t really able to get the money shot, but I’m happy enough with my pictures. Pictures really can’t do the justice to the rock formations. It was more wonderful than I had imagined. Then the added extra prize of whale watching! As we rounded the formations, our fabulous tour guide and boat captain set about making sure we had as good a chance as expected to see whale activity. Along with gobs of information about the whales we learned how to spot the horizon for that iconic “blow” a burst of water into the air that precipitated the whale coming to the surface. For the next hour we followed first one whale and then a grouping of three…It was exhilarating!!!! When the whale popped up through the waters shouts of glee and amazement unexpectedly came out of our mouths. The wonder of seeing such a sight can never be replaced! Ive included a few pictures to give you an idea of what we saw but unfortunately there is no way to convey the feelings of sheer wonder that accompanied them.
We even got a couple of tail shots! One thing I would mention: We were on a large boat that held about 50 people. The little boats you see in the pictures were faster and leaner so they would zip back and forth in front of us getting the best views possible for their tourists.. One of those happened to be right beside a whale when it surfaced… man did they scream!!!
And finally …my fish tail!Back at the dock we headed to Senior Frog’s for a margarita and tacos….good but expensive. In fact, I would say things in Cabo have gone from the sleepy little town to outright “place to be”. The marina was full of yachts that were certainly not any cheaper than those we saw in Fort Lauderdale. I definitely want to go back another time and spend more than one day there.
Tomorrow we take two sea days to get to Los Angeles. Many of the interesting people we have met on the ship will be disembarking to head to their homes and the ship will fill to full with new passengers who are joining us on the trip around the world. It will be an exciting day on Sunday. At least I think it will be Sunday, so far Ive gotten totally confused and have had to change my clock time three times and double check the date and day of the week. Anyway, after we get by US Customs and Border Protection in LA we will have a couple of excursions to fill our day while the “newbies” get settled in their rooms.
