Day 23…All I’ve seen is blue, blue seas for five days….and tomorrow will be the same.

Sailing the Pacific Ocean has been an adventure for sure.  Did you know it’s waters comprise one third of the planet’s surface? Supposedly when Ferdinand Magellan crossed the Pacific he dubbed it Mar Pacifico meaning Peaceful sea…. I think he was hallucinating from lack of seeing land.  As we left LA, the Captain made the decision to skip Santa Barbara and head right south to sea  trying to avoid the most extreme weather that California has been experiencing.  How glad I am that he did that. Even so, our seas have been not calm as glass.  Even though we have sailed between two weather systems, and the captain has slowed our speed occasionally, we have consistently sailed into swells of 18-22 feet.  That’s high enough to give us the continual feeling of a roller coaster ride.

The view out the bow of the ship.  There is a beautiful area with a nice bar, comfy furniture and floor to ceiling windows.  When the ship moves forward the height of the swell can be seen by how the line of the outside railing looks against the horizon.  Its quite deceptive without a line of sight.. the swells just look like small waves of water
This was taken off our balcony just now. The small white spots over everything is salt from the water splashing up on the deck.  Its really pungent and ,well, salty! I thought I would miss seeing land but so far Ive enjoyed looking for wildlife amongst the water..not that Ive actually seen any, but I’ll keep looking.

Our daily routine varies but of course it always includes more delightful food than anyone should eat.  I keep meaning to take pictures of our meals, but only remember when I’m almost done. We have made nice friends aboard and usually we are deep in wonderful conversations and I truly forget to “picture “ my food.  Al continues to take bridge lessons and play bridge in the afternoon while I stick with the watercolor classes.  I figure I will try to make as many projects as I have children and then give them away so they can put my work on their refrigerators for a change!

My finished coral reef picture

Doodle art bookmark ( which gave me a tremendous cramp in my writing hand! But I enjoyed it)
Practicing curvy lines  in a wacky wildlife mural.

Not finished but nearly. Tomorrow I add detailing and embellishments.  These paintings will be hung together along the wall during an art show at the end of the segment of this cruise. Our teacher is a Kiwi and will be disembarking in Auckland. Ive really enjoyed her teaching style and look forward to the class.

We will dock in Honolulu On Sunday for two days.  I am looking forward to standing on dry land for a day or two.

  1. Hi! Just discovered your blog and binge-read all the posts from when you shipped off your luggage! What a lovely adventure for you and Al! My DH and I were on the 2022 Viking WC on the Star, and to say it was life-changing is an understatement! Glad to hear that Casper is on the Neptune. He's an amazing officer and such a great person.

    Who is your cruise director?
