Los Angeles- Part Two Albert’s story

While I spent my day i a bus driving through the streets of LA, Albert decided he was up for a walking tour as that was the only way to see a building he has admired for many years.  His tour was named the Old And New downtown. The bus took him into the downtown area where the guide walked the group along the streets and gave them an informative tour about the exceptional architecture found there.

The Eastern Building

Entryway into the building showing classic Art Deco features.
The Tower Theatre

Unbelievable ceiling

Now an Apple Store!

Old and new!

Entrance to the Angels Flight a narrow gauge funicular railway

Inside the car. Reminiscent of cable cars
Disney Building. New architecture!

The shiny sides were so bright that they reflected the sun badly. When it was finished the surrounding buildings noticed an increase in their indoor temperatures by up to 10 degrees +.  Disney had to buff out the exterior of the building to reduce the amount of reflective heat.
The Million Dollar Theatre. Beautiful entrance Across the street from the Bradbury building

THE BRADBURY
For Albert, this was the highlight of the LA visit. He has seen this building in movies and television shows for most of his life beginning with the classic OuterLimits TV show, episode “Demon with the Glass Hand” and on in movies such as 500 Days of Summer, Wolf,Disclosure,China Town, and BladeRunner. It was as beautiful as he thought it would be.
An unassuming entrance reveals nothing.  Built in 1893 it is a work of Italian Renaissance Revival. In 1971 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Landmark in 1977. It is the city’s oldest registered building.

Albert was awed and inspired by the beauty of the inside from the elevator to the roof. They were fortunate to be able to enter the building as it is a working office building and this was a Sunday. This is such a gem of a building and sadly there might have been many more buildings of its kind and Art Deco buildings that lost the battle against progress and developement as Los Angeles moved forward in the 20th century
