Day 24… Cozumel and the number 74!

Today we dock in Mexico at the port of Cozumel. We first visited this island in 1987 or so with our neighbors from Iowa. We stayed in Cancun and took a jet catamaran to the island. On the World Cruise we docked at this much updated dock and explored the Mayan ruins found on the island. This day we were one of three cruise ships to dock at port and were the smallest by a mile! Our 289 passengers weren’t much compared to the neighbor ship with over 3000 and the much larger ship not shown in the picture of 6000 +….and my enthusiasm for visiting was on the low end. There’s really not much more to do here than what we’ve already done.
Albert is going on a submarine dive today to look at the coral reef and ship wreck and Im just going to the included tour of visiting a chocolate store, seeing how its made and then to a dance show. We scheduled afternoon tours so we could attack the local pharmacia and get some replacement drugs while we are here.
The cacao company

A bean full of little cacao beans that are so so good!
This gentleman showing us how to grind cacao beans and make chocolate. The additives never include sugar.. maybe a little honey but originally was a drink made with water to drink. I enjoyed tasting it and like the way it tastes without the milk!

They are ready to celebrate Dia de Los Muertos

A bar at the chocolate store where the specialty was a chocolate margarita…and the seats swings.
We went to an arena for a native dance celebration… in fact, it actually was a Luca Libre wrestling ring and I couldn’t help but wait for Nacho Libre to show up! There were many dancers with wonderful costumes showing us the dances of the Mayans…it just seemed too much like a glitzy show for my tastes.

A lovely sculpture on the site
The dancers

All with beautiful costumes

While I was attending the included tour, Albert spent his afternoon in a submarine with 42 other passengers looking at the coral reefs from undersea.
The sub. All those slits on the side are windows for viewing.

Ive picked a few of his pictures to show. The color is because of the tinted windows in the submarine. This is a ship that has been wrecked to promote coral reef development.

Ive tried to point to some giant clams, and interesting plant life

School of fish

A large school of fish! Al said the actual fish were very colorful and enjoyable to see.
Two things happened when we returned to the ship. First we had this cute bottle of tequila as a gift from the crew for the world cruisers

And the 5000 piece puzzle was finished!
Our evening was a nice dinner in the Italian restaurant with some new friends and the crew came and sang to me, gave me hugs and made me feel great! All day long every singe crew member I ran into on ship has wished me birthday greetings! Even the Hotel Manager sent me a card and wished me well.
It isn’t always easy to celebrate these birthdays anymore as they are pointing the way to the inevitable, but Viking seems to know just the right way to do it! My email even had a birthday song sung by crew and CEO of the company.
Ill leave you today with this picture.. Im thinking 74 is not to bad! Im lucky to live the life I have and look forward to many more years of joy!

  1. Welcome to 74! I hit it in June.
Love following your blog. I did this section of the last October. It took me four visits to do the world cruise and 14 months! Guest Services Manager, Liesl was nice enough to give me a patch. Love it! You are getting all kinds of nice surprises. Enjoy!!
